“The week in sports” has been on a very long hiatus due to NFL coverage taking over much of thefatherlife’s sports articles. Weekly power rankings trumped TWIS and we’ve missed out on a lot since the last article in July. I’m back and better ( and more sarcastic) than ever!
Super Bowl XLV: The Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in a game that originally looked like a laugher. The Packers led 21-3 in the second quarter and looked to be ready to pummel the favored Steelers. But a Hines Ward receiving touchdown to end the half and a Rashard Mendenhall rushing score to start the third brought the score to a much more reasonable 21-17.
Green Bay built a 28-17 lead when Aaron Rodgers hit Greg Jennings with an eight yard score with 11:57 left in the game, but Pittsburgh didn’t give up. Big Ben found Mike Wallace for a twenty-five yarder and Antwaan Randle-El caught the two-point conversion to make it 28-25 with just over seven minutes remaining. A Pack field goal with a little over two minutes left and a stop on fourth down led to Green Bay and Rodgers hoisting the Vince Lombardi trophy in triumphant victory. Rodgers was named MVP after passing for 304 yards and three touchdowns.
NBA: The “big three” in Miami started off a lot colder than people thought they would. The Cleveland radio show that had cursed them looked like they had done their job when the Heat was 9-8, but now that Cavaliers have broken the NBA’s record for most losses in a row. Miami is now 39-14 and Cleveland is 9-45. I guess the karma police came after them.
MLB: Baseball spring training begins this week as catcher and pitchers report. As a Red Sox fan, I couldn’t be more excited for this season. Boston acquired a stud first baseman (Adrian Gonzalez), a new electric outfielder (Carl Crawford) and a gaggle of decent relief pitchers (Dan Wheeler, Bobby Jenks and Alfredo Aceves). Also, the Yankees didn’t get Cliff Lee and they only signed old players with little or nothing left. I say this mostly because I’m trying to rile up Yankees fans. Clearly, the Yanks will be in the thick of it. But, if I was a member of the evil empire I’d be a little concerned about this aging team.
NHL: Vancouver with a record of 36-11-9 is leading the Western Conference and Philadelphia (surprisingly) is leading the East with a record of 36-13-5. Tampa’s Steve Stamkos is leading the NHL in points with 74 and somehow Peter Forsberg is back. Of course he re-signed to play with the Avalanche. Let’s see how much he has left in the tank.
NLL: The Toronto Rock are leading the East with 5-2 mark as we near the mid-point of the season. They are followed close behind by Rochester (4-2), Buffalo (4-2) and Boston (5-3). In the West, the defending champion Washington Stealth doesn’t really resemble the scary team from last season. Right now, they are on the outside looking in with a record of 3-5 at the halfway point. Calgary is barely clinging to the West lead with a record of 4-3.
The NLL has reached a deal with the Versus Network to televise a bunch of games including the All-Star game and the playoffs. Check out the first broadcast on February 27th at 2 pm when the East takes on the West in the All-Star game. Check Versus.com for other games and times.
