Did you have to pay the airlines “overweight” on your way home from your last business trip?  …and no I am not talking about your luggage.

[A DAD'S POINT-OF-VIEW] Marriage — It’s Complicated»
By Bruce Sallan • Be the first to comment. »

My wife took me to see Nancy Meyers’ new movie, It’s Complicated, which stars Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin.  She had seen it a day or two before and wanted to see it with me saying, “It would be good for us.”  Honestly, I do tend to like what [...]

In every marriage, spouses face an inevitable choice between their children and their spouse. It is a classic dilemma that confronts every couple and one that is inescapable and difficult. It is especially true in second marriages, like mine.  I have to admit, it is an ongoing issue in our home [...]

Raising Safe and Happy Kids»
By Paula Statman • 2 Comments »

Love is more than a wonderful gift to give your children; it’s also good insurance.  Showing your love tells them they are worthy of love and respect and shapes their expectations of how others treat them.
A child who feels loved is less likely to look for love in the wrong places…from [...]

[A FATHER'S VOICE] My Little Indulgence»
By Jeremy Schneider • 1 Comment »

The tricky part is the hallway. I carefully try to place my foot on our wood floor hallway in the tiny spots that don’t creak loud enough for our neighbors to call the police. I gently place my hand on the door knob and open the door, without letting go because if I do it will slam into the wall. I look into the room and bask in the sweetness of my 5-year old twins sleeping silently, peacefully, infusing my heart and soul with love, affection and utter goodness.

There are easier, more effective, ways to look like a million bucks than by plunking down that much on some surgical solution — the way some Hollywood pretty-boy wannabe would. And just your luck: all involve treating your body better. It’s true, a healthier lifestyle can actually boost your physical appearance — targeting everything from [...]

Volvo Goes Electric»
By Driving Today • Be the first to comment. »

Because Volvo is so imbued with a green, people-friendly ethic, it is hard for some to believe that the brand doesn’t offer an electric car. Giving consumers the choice of an emissions-free vehicle seems utterly in keeping with what most people think about Volvo. Happily, the lack of a Volvo-built battery-electric is about to change.

[TECH] Litl Comes Up Short»
By Gabe Stampone • Be the first to comment. »

The fine folks at Litl were nice enough to send us a Litl Webbook to test out and let both big and little hands play around with it.  The results of our tests showed some promise for the Litl company, but there are some shortcomings.
When we opened the box we were impressed [...]

[TECH] A Home With a High IQ»

Jim Lipsit’s wife, Cindy, knows exactly when her husband’s car pulls into the driveway — even if she’s still at work — because the house sends her a text message. And that’s not all. The Lipsits’ 2,500-square-foot home in Lake Worth, Fla., also turns off lights when people leave the room, automatically shuts off [...]

[NFL] Conference Championship Weekend 2010»

Remember when everyone was talking about how the Jets backed into the playoffs? They needed to win their last two games and somehow got lucky enough to face two teams that had already clinched spots in the postseason. Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell took out most of his starters with Indy holding a 15-10 lead in [...]

Talking to Your Kids About Haiti»
By Ben Martin • 3 Comments »

Talking to children about tragedy is a job most parents would love to avoid. If only our children did not need to hear about things like this week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti. But they do hear. And they are full of questions: Could this happen to me? What’s going to happen to the children? Can [...]

Will 2010 Be a Better Year to Buy a Car?»
By Driving Today • 2 Comments »

One thing auto industry veterans will tell you is they never saw a year like 2009 … and they never want to see another one like it. The year included the seemingly unthinkable: bankruptcy for General Motors. And as an added fillip, Chrysler went bankrupt too and was rescued by the unlikely combination of the [...]

Bye-bye, Aughts — don’t let the door hit you in the ’00s on your way out.
True, there were all those years of economic euphoria. Only thing is — like that classic sitcom Seinfeld — they were based on nothing. As a result, the United States is stumbling into the Tweens with a full-on nasty hangover [...]
